Microsoft Search Engine Personalizes Results

Microsoft's research arm has developed a prototype search engine with social networking features that let users edit and reorder search results, and share them with online friends.
The prototype engine marks Microsoft's latest effort to bolster its search business to better compete against market leader Google Inc., which captured 63% of the search market in August, according to ComScore Inc. Microsoft held about 8% of the search market at the time, according to the market researcher.
Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled a rewards program aimed at boosting traffic to its Live Search site. And industry observers have noted that Microsoft's so-far failed effort to acquire Yahoo Inc. likely was piqued by Yahoo's search assets.
Microsoft Research said that the prototype search engine, called U Rank , will help it learn more about how people use search technologies. The prototype was unveiled earlier this month.
"U Rank is a research project to help us learn more about how people organize search results as they go about larger information tasks, how people collaboratively search, and generally, how people edit and share searches," the company said in a blog post . "We believe that finding something on the Web is only the first step for many tasks. To better support people as they are exploring a topic U Rank has general support for organizing, annotating, remembering, and sharing search results."
U Rank lets users reorder and edit search results and move search results between searches, Microsoft said. Changes made to a user's own search results, such as moves, deletions and the adding of new results and notes, can be made visible to friends.
Microsoft said that it envisions users tapping U Rank for various search scenarios, such as:
Organizing and annotating results by summarizing key information under each URL;
Keeping lists while researching;
Collaborating by sharing URLs with friends;
Making recommendations to friends by sharing preferred sites;
Mixing video and images with Web results; and
Moving favorite sites to higher search result slots.
Frederic Lardinois, a blogger at Read Write Web, said that U Rank is different than the Digg -style search interface that Microsoft had been rumored to be developing.
"In U Rank, your changes only appear to your friends and don't influence the overall search index," he added. "The emphasis of U Rank is on collaboration and sharing. U Rank keeps a history of all your searches, but these are not shared by default."
Lardinois also noted that U Rank is clearly a prototype because search results take a long time to load, and Microsoft still needs to work out basic user interface issues.
"There is, for example, no way to move a search result from the second search page to the first, and the interface for dragging and dropping items sometimes doesn't work well," he said. "To be really useful, it would also be helpful if you could organize your friends into groups, so that you can share your searches on lists more selectively."
But, he added, U Rank takes search into a different direction by adding social interaction.
"If your searches tend to be very broad, you would probably have to have a lot of friends to ever encounter an annotated or reordered result, but we can see how this new interface could be very useful if you are working in a team that is focused on a very specific topic."
Earlier this year, Yahoo also moved to open its search engine to allow third parties to add data to search results.

Microsoft Redesigns Live.com

A redesign of the Live.com home page may not be quite what analysts had in mind last week when they asked Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer about how the software giant plans to streamline its online presence.
Starting Wednesday, visitors in the U.S. are being shown a new Live.com page -- although they may not notice it's new. The page looks mostly the same as before, except it now features a background photo that apparently will change periodically.
The photo features a few blurry squares that show up when a mouse passes over them. If the user hovers for an extra second, a box pops up with a message that, when clicked, brings them to a page with additional information, including maps and photos.
The current photo features a man on a long boat on an African river. The information squares point to photos of animals that live in Botswana and other facts about the country's natural features.
The design was well-received among customers trialing it last month, according to a blog post by Chris Rayner, senior product manager, and Zach Gutt, senior program manager, both of Microsoft's Live search user experience team.
Like the previous design, the page predominantly features the search bar and lets users choose to search images and videos. Links point to Web pages for Live maps, news and other Microsoft offerings.
"We think the new design is a great start, but there's more to come, with lots of interesting directions that we'll be exploring in our next releases of the home page," the employees wrote on the blog.
Analysts who asked Ballmer last week how the company might fix its confusing online branding to make it easier for users to find Microsoft's online services might be relieved to hear that there are more changes to come. Microsoft maintains both the MSN and Live online brands, and in some cases the same online services carry both names.
Ballmer said Microsoft has been working on a way to combine its online services under a single Web page. However, the new Live.com page includes links to MSN.com and the Windows Live home page, so the current redesign hasn't addressed that problem.
Indeed, while the pictures might give the Live।com home page more aesthetic appeal, Microsoft is unlikely to gain ground against Google in online search and advertising until it clarifies its online services. In search, Google continues to hold a daunting lead over Microsoft, which runs a distant third even to Yahoo, the company Microsoft failed to acquire after months of negotiations.

MySpace Makes Data Portability Move

Responding to the momentum around data portability, MySpace has launched its own "Data Availability" effort with big-name partners Yahoo, eBay, Twitter, and fellow News Corp. unit Photobucket.
The initiative's goal is to let MySpace members share their public profile data outside of the walls of the social-networking site.
"Today, MySpace no longer operates as an autonomous island on the Internet, by allowing the data that creates the engaging and collaborative experience that is MySpace to now be shared across all the sites our users visit," said Chris DeWolfe, CEO and cofounder of MySpace, during a press conference.
Enter Information Only Once
As the popularity of social networks keeps rising and people set up multiple profiles in such sites, they are demanding the ability to carry their data, content and connections from one site to another, so that they don't have to re-enter all that information again.
This is what the MySpace initiative aims to address, DeWolfe said. "Your personal online social profile will become your Internet address. Social activity isn't about creating a walled garden. Socially dynamic Web destinations should be portable and allow users to import and export aspects of their platform," he said.
The functionality will become available at some point in the coming weeks to both users and third-party sites. At the core will be privacy and security controls so that users retain tight control over what data they share and in which site.
"The initiative is founded first and foremost on allowing users to have comprehensive control over their own content and data. Users will have complete control over what information they share and who they share it with," said MySpace Chief Operating Officer Amit Kapur.
Outside of MySpace
Data and content that users will be able to carry outside of MySpace will include public basic profile information, like their bios, interests, favorite music and movies, as well as their photos and videos.
Changes made to these elements on their MySpace profiles will be dynamically updated on the third-party sites. This also includes decisions to drop a site from their network of updates, which is key to privacy and security principles, MySpace officials said.
"Rather than populating new profiles and updating information across every Web site ... users can now update their status on MySpace and dynamically share that information with the other sites they care about," Kapur said.
MySpace will make this functionality available not only to large Web sites like the initial partners, but to sites of all sizes, including "mom-and-pop" ones with little technical know-how.
The main tool for MySpace members will be a control panel where they'll be able to manage their "data availability" parameters. The granularity of the controls in this panel will increase over time. Meanwhile, MySpace will also release client-side and server-side tools based on open standards for third-party Web sites that want to participate.
Part of the initiative includes MySpace's joining of the DataPortability Workgroup. Data availability is MySpace's first step toward embracing all aspects of data portability, said Jim Benedetto, MySpace's senior vice president of technology.
Asked whether Facebook would be welcome to participate in this initiative, DeWolfe said that the rival social network would indeed be able to participate, as well as any other site on the Web that's interested.
