Cisco Broadens Data Center Role

Cisco this week launched several products designed to expand the capabilities of its switches and routers in further virtualizing data center systems and processes.
The broadened lineup includes virtual machine (VM) switching software, SAN switching modules and operating system enhancements, as well as extensions to its WAN application acceleration portfolio to virtualize branch offices and desktops. The new products underscore Cisco's intention to assume more general and overall IT functions within compute-intensive data centers beyond its traditional switching and routing role.
Some of the new products were expected.
The VM switching software is called VN-Link and it comes in two flavors: Nexus 1000V, which is a software-only version for multivendor servers; and hardware embedded into Cisco's Nexus 5000 data center switch.
VN-Link runs with VMware's ESX server software and is a replacement for that software's VM switching capability. VN-Link features policy-based VM connectivity and mobility, by taking a VM's network and security properties with it while it is moved around the data center.
This is intended to provide consistent operations of the mobile VM environment, Cisco says.
The new SAN products include three 8Gbps Fibre Channel switching modules for Cisco's MDS 9000 SAN switches, and new capabilities in Cisco's SAN operating system, which has been re-branded NX-OS. The modules are intended to upgrade MDS 9000 customers to higher speeds from the 2G and 4Gbps speeds the switches now support.
The modules sport 24, 48 or four 8G/44 4Gbps ports -- for consolidation of standard servers -- and support line-rate encryption of Fibre Channel data between any Cisco MDS 9000 8Gbps module, Cisco says. The modules adhere to Cisco's TrustSec Fibre Channel security architecture, which defines role-based access to networked resources.
The Cisco SAN operating system, SAN-OS, has been renamed NX-OS to reflect Cisco's goal of developing a single data center operating system optimized for a unified -- or Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) -- switching fabric for both LAN and SAN traffic. Enhancements to NX-OS include support for the new 8Gbps modules; consistent policy, visibility, and diagnostics for both physical and virtual server environments; virtual machine awareness through VN-Link; and data erasure.
The new Cisco 8Gbps SAN switch modules are expected to be available in the fourth quarter. Pricing will be set by Cisco's storage partners, which will be offering the new modules.
The enhancements to Cisco's Wide Area Applications Services (WAAS) appliance include new platforms with blades that feature desktop virtualization capabilities. These models are designed to lower branch office desktop operations costs by reducing bandwidth consumption and improving performance across the WAN by virtualizing desktop applications among remote users.
The new models of WAAS with the virtual blades are called the WAVE 574 and 474. Cisco also unveiled a lower end version -- the WAVE 274 -- for small-to-midsize businesses.
VN-Link and the WAVE appliances are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2009। Cisco says it has not yet determined pricing.

New Casio Digital Camera Has Burst Shooting Mode

Casio America has introduced its Exilim EX-FH20. The new point-and-shoot digital camera costs $599.99 and will be available in October.
The Casio Exilim EX-FH20 can record high-speed videos and shoot up to 40 frames at a time in burst mode.The EX-FH20 features a 9.1 megapixel sensor and a 26mm-equivalent wide angle lens with 20x optical zoom. It also features anti-shake capabilities, a night scene setting and the ability to record movies at 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 frames per second (AVI format).
The EX-FH20 is the latest Casio Exilim model to feature a high-speed "burst" shooting mode. It can capture up to 40 frames per second at 7 megapixels, in a single burst. The camera can also record high-speed movie footage -- you can set the recording speed at 30 fps, 210fps, 420 fps or 1,000 fps, recording motion you can't actually see.
The camera records still images in raw or JPEG format, and writes data to an SDHC memory card. It's also compatible with SD memory cards, MultiMediaCards and MultiMediaCardPlus.
Casio's Web site had not been updated with information about the EX-FH20 as Macworld posted this article।

Cisco and Microsoft Interoperability Efforts: One Year Later

Q&A: Bob Muglia of Microsoft and Cisco’s Kathy Hill discuss how ongoing collaboration between the two companies continues to deliver new advances in interoperability for customers across multiple fronts।
The initiative was jointly launched by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Cisco chairman and CEO John Chambers, and is currently being spearheaded operationally by Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft, and Kathy Hill, senior vice president of Access and Networking Services at Cisco.
Following the one-year anniversary of the announcement, PressPass spoke with Muglia and Hill to get a progress report on the collaboration, how customers are benefiting and where the relationship goes from here.
Q: When you originally embarked on this collaboration a year ago, what was your objective?
Hill: A year ago we announced a commitment to working together so that our customers can be successful regardless of whose solutions they choose. Our approach is based on a commitment that where we do compete, we will continue to address our customers’ needs for interoperability between our respective products.
Muglia: Yes, our customers were very clear in voicing their desire for greater interoperability between their Cisco networking gear and Microsoft software. Cisco and Microsoft have participated in many areas of customer-driven interoperability for more than a decade. In fact, prior to the 2007 announcement we accelerated many areas of collaboration to better address our customers’ needs - from IT architecture to security to management scenarios. Last year, we realized we needed to do a better job communicating to our customers about those areas of collaboration and how committed the companies are to providing highly interoperable solutions.
Q: What have been the chief accomplishments of Microsoft and Cisco’s interoperability work over the past year?
Muglia: Last year, we outlined the work we were doing across seven areas: IT architecture, security, management, wireless and mobile, unified communications, connected entertainment and small and medium-sized businesses (SMB).
While we continue to make progress in each of these areas, the three that stand out over the past year are network optimization, IT architecture and connected entertainment.
A great example of this progress is Cisco’s work in optimizing customer networks for efficient deployment of Microsoft software. This Cisco network optimization for Microsoft applications has helped our customers deploy SharePoint, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 out into branch offices and over their wide area networks (WANs). It’s an arena in which we’ve been able to work harmoniously together, generating some nice synergies between our respective technologies for the benefit of our mutual customers.
I’d also highlight our joint efforts embedding Windows Server 2008 on Cisco’s Wide-Area Appliance Service (WAAS) branch office solution (called “Windows Server on WAAS”), which gives our customers an integrated appliance for their branch offices. It provides customers with a single solution that delivers the core IT services of Windows Server 2008 at the branch location, improving efficiency and responsiveness, while relieving the network for quick and reliable application delivery.

Finally, I think this joint commitment has allowed us to be very upfront and open with our customers about our unified communications offerings, spelling out how we will compete and how our software will work with Cisco products.
Hill: It has been a productive year, as Bob explained. We’ve also made progress in a few other areas.
Cisco recently decided to join Microsoft and other vendors as a member of TSANet, an industry organization that is trying to make it easier for companies to manage multi-vendor IT contracts. I’d put this in a similar category to our ongoing work with the Interop Vendor Alliance, a community of software and hardware vendors dedicated to improving the interoperability of their products with Microsoft systems.
The other result we’re proud of is our continued momentum with Internet TV. In January, we launched the Linksys Media Extender, which works in conjunction with Windows Vista Media Center to deliver streamed content from the PC to the TV. Meanwhile, we recently surpassed the million-unit mark for shipments of Cisco IP set-top boxes supporting the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV platform. That’s powerful proof of the business case for the work we’ve done together.
Besides these developments, I’d really underscore the importance of Windows on WAAS, which is a great example of the kind of mutually-beneficial initiative this collaboration has made possible. It’s a scenario in which the two companies joined forces to be better together. Customers can use two solutions that actually enhance each other. We are truly going to market hand-in-hand, which our customers have really appreciated.
Q: What other benefits have Cisco and Microsoft’s mutual customers seen?
Muglia: By providing our customers with a clear picture of where we’re working together, now and into the future, we’re helping them make informed investment decisions with reduced risk and as much foresight as possible. It is our goal to make sure our customers know where we stand so they have the peace of mind that they are not locked into a particular piece of technology as their needs evolve. This clear picture allows them to evaluate the technology that represents the best fit for their specific needs, based solely on its merits, without needing to juggle other considerations.
I think we’ve been able to help ensure that our customers can deploy the very latest Microsoft software as easily as possible and that it will work with the Cisco networking solutions. To provide more information about this effort, we worked with Cisco to produce a white paper detailing how Cisco’s network optimization can help customers deploy Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and Windows Vista more efficiently with lower risk and at a reduced cost.
Similarly, Windows running on Cisco WAAS enables customers to roll out Windows Server 2008 features in their branch offices with reduced administration and management overhead and enhanced control over Windows services across their branch network.
Although Microsoft and Cisco will continue to compete for customers in the unified communications arena, both of our companies share a joint commitment to ensure the appropriate level of interoperability between our respective products for the benefit of our customers and partners. We will keep working together to communicate clearly with our customers, partners and sales forces as to how we are competing and cooperating.
Hill: The work we’ve done has been well received by our joint customers, which of course represents a significant number of organizations. The vast majority of Global 2000 companies are Cisco-Microsoft shops and we estimated that 98 percent of our mutual large company customers use both Cisco and Microsoft products.
Aside from the general positive feedback, Windows on WAAS really highlights how the fruits of our cooperation are squarely addressing our customers’ needs. Branch offices are proliferating, to the extent that 90 percent of employees now work outside of their organizations’ headquarters. Satellite offices also represent an increasingly strategic component of any enterprise because they are closer to customers in the field. They are becoming major consumers of IT resources and an increasingly important consideration for IT and business decision-makers.
Beyond direct customer benefits, this collaboration is creating opportunities for our industry partners and systems integrators, which translates into additional benefits for our customers. The interoperability and integration road map helps our services partners develop better, more customer-focused offerings, expediting their time to market and deployment. To these partners, our collaboration is making all the difference and delivering some nice top-line benefits to their business.
Q: How have you taken account of key industry trends and developments since its announcement last August?
Hill: Addressing emerging customer needs is what this collaboration is all about. We put our heads together to get out in front of our customers to anticipate their needs and address the real-life technology issues they face. For example, many of our customers are considering shifting from running some of their IT services in-house to having them hosted remotely. Cisco and Microsoft are working together to identify how this change impacts the network and computing resources to ensure that our customers’ requirements are met.
Muglia: One of the biggest trends we’ve seen has been in online services. To address this we recently brought together the key people responsible for the online services strategies in both companies to share our respective views and brainstorm how we might best combine our efforts for the benefit of customers and to accelerate take-up of this exciting new paradigm. Our work is ongoing and we are in touch regularly, so we’re always on the lookout for fresh ways in which we can deliver value and address the emerging needs of our customers.
Q: How have Cisco and Microsoft been able to juggle this cooperation with their ongoing competition in product arenas, such as unified communications?
Hill: It is fair to say that both companies are aggressive growth engines, so there’s going to be overlap in certain markets where we are looking to help our mutual customers. In markets where we intersect like the connected home, unified communications and security, we’ve made a conscious decision to take extra steps to improve the interoperability of our products for the benefit of customers. And even though unified communications is clearly an area of competition, it is also one of the areas into which we’ve directed much of our collaborative energy in the spirit of giving our customers the choice and flexibility they’ve told us matters to them.
Muglia: I’d agree. We think competition is great for customers because in new and fast-growing markets like unified communications it gives them choice between alternative technology solutions that meet their needs. And in the long run, competition will help accelerate the market for unified communications by spurring new technologies and driving down costs.
At the same time, we’ve got people on both Cisco and Microsoft internal teams tasked with advancing UC interoperability alongside people dedicated to other areas of interoperability, because this is what our customers have expressly asked for.
Q: Looking ahead, how will the collaboration evolve and develop?
Hill: For the future, our customers can count on the continued strength of our mutual commitment, and they should certainly look for us to continue to expand our portfolio of joint products. We are working closely with customers like Monsanto and Arthur J Gallagher & Co. and will continue to gain feedback from them on our progress.
At the end of the day, we don’t want to lose sight of the fact that Microsoft is the biggest producer of software and we’re the biggest maker of networking technology. Computing software and the network must work together to drive business innovation and deliver a more compelling user experience. Through our work with Microsoft we’re working together to push the boundaries of what’s possible with networking and software innovation coming together.
Muglia: Looking ahead, we’ll continue to focus on datacenter architecture, security, IT management and online services-related scenarios. These issues still represent significant areas of interest to our customers, and areas where our collaboration can continue to advance work happening in the industry as well.
We want to assure our customers that this is an initiative to which both companies attach the utmost importance. The fact that we have executive-level buy-in right up to the boardroom as evidenced by the joint launch of the initiative by both CEOs last year is a measure of our collective commitment to making it work on behalf of our customers.
In addition, Kathy and I get together quarterly, and often check in even more regularly than that, as well as bringing in the leads of the individual areas of collaboration at least once a quarter। We have people on the Microsoft side for whom the relationship with Cisco constitutes a significant part of what they do.

Cisco Combines SMB Engineering Teams

Cisco Systems has combined the engineering teams for all its small and medium-sized business (SMB) products, forming a single group to develop products for the Cisco and Linksys brands.
The new team could swap features across the two brands, bringing Linksys ease-of-use innovations to Cisco gear and more advanced capabilities such as customization features from the parent brand down to Linksys equipment, said Andrew Sage, vice president of small business sales, worldwide channels at Cisco.
The move, which comes as Cisco also folds its Linksys channel partner program into Cisco's, is the latest nudge toward an eventual elimination of the Linksys brand that executives have hinted at several times. But the company is not making changes to product branding, Sage said.
Linksys is a strong brand in home and small-business networking gear in the U.S., coming from the successful Irvine, California, vendor Cisco acquired in 2003. But the name isn't well known in other countries. And recognizing the size and dynamism of the SMB market, Cisco has jumped deeper into a market where Linksys made its name.
Cisco says the Linksys gear is designed for SMBs with fewer technology demands, which buy one piece at a time and set up networks themselves. It lacks some features of Cisco's own small-business gear, such as unified communications and certain security capabilities. But Chairman and CEO John Chambers has described a long-term goal of bringing all Cisco products under a single brand.
The two changes discussed on Tuesday follow the creation of a Small Business Council to align Cisco's small-business strategy worldwide. Councils like this are part of an overall reorganization of Cisco that Chambers has said was made possible by new communication tools, including TelePresence high-end videoconferencing, that allow a shift from command-and-control management. The Small Business Council consists of Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Sue Bostrom, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Channels Keith Goodwin and Small Business Technology Group Senior Vice President Ian Pennell.
Neither change discussed Tuesday affects consumer products, which Cisco has positioned as a major growth area for the future -- even TelePresence is headed to the home -- but has kept under the Linksys brand.
Under the change in channel strategy announced Tuesday, the approximately 20,000 resellers in the Linksys Partner Connection program have until Sept. 16 to become Cisco Registered Channel Partners. Joining the Cisco program at this tier will only require a few registration steps, not the extensive training required for higher certifications, Sage said. The resellers will gain access to some free training as well as discounts, marketing and other benefits.
The reorganization should make it easier for Cisco to handle its channel for the critical SMB customer base, where it wants to gain market share, said Ken Presti, a channels analyst at Presti Research and Consulting. Cisco is not as strong in SMB, where it faces competition from Netgear and D-Link Systems, as in large enterprises, he said.
"This is a company that clearly has designs on that market space," Presti said.
Shifting to the Cisco program shouldn't be too much work for Linksys partners, Presti said. But making the change could be hectic with just 30 days.
"I think that's a little bit too soon, because you've got to give these guys some time to digest the change," he said। If they haven't become Cisco partners, those resellers could still buy products from distributors and resell them, but without discounts or other partner benefits.

Cisco Routers Again Take Hacker Spotlight

The Cisco hacking scene has been pretty quiet for the past three years, but at this week's Black Hat hacker conference in Las Vegas, there's going to be a little noise.
Security researchers will give talks on rootkits and new hacking and intrusion-detection software for the routers that carry most of the Internet's traffic.
Three years ago, security researcher Michael Lynn shined a spotlight on Cisco's products when he talked about how he ran a simple "shellcode" program on a router without authorization. Lynn's controversial talk was the biggest story at Black Hat 2005. He had to quit his day job to get around a company prohibition on discussing Cisco, and both he and the conference organizers were quickly sued by Cisco. The networking company argued that Lynn's presentation slides contained information that violated the company's intellectual property rights, and Lynn's talk was literally ripped out of the conference materials package. In a settlement agreement, the researcher was barred from further discussing his work, but copies of his presentation (pdf) were posted online.
Today, Cisco Chief Security Officer John Stewart is remarkably candid about the experience, saying that his company acted for the right reasons -- protecting its customers and intellectual property -- but went too far. "We did some sort of silly things," he said. "Which is why I personally sponsored Black Hat at the platinum level ever since. Because I think we had some atonement to do."
Lynn wasn't without a job for long. He was quickly snatched up by Cisco competitor Juniper Networks, but for a few years after his talk, there wasn't much public discussion of Cisco hacking, according to Jeff Moss, Black Hat's director.
Moss believes that economics may have driven some Cisco researchers underground. Any code that exploits Cisco vulnerabilities is so prized that any hacker who chooses to disclose his findings, rather than sell them to a security company or government agency, is often giving up a lot of money, Moss said. Mike Lynn's vulnerability was worth about US$250,000, he reckons.
But this year things have opened up. Black Hat organizers plan three talks on Cisco routers and the Internetwork Operating System that they run. "All of a sudden this year a lot of stuff has been breaking loose," Moss said.
Lately, with Microsoft Windows no longer the fertile ground for bug hunting that it once was, researchers are looking at other products to hack. And Cisco's routers are an interesting target. They command more than 60 percent of the router market, according to research firm IDC.
"If you own the network, you own the company," said Nicolas Fischbach, senior manager of network engineering and security with COLT Telecom, a European data service provider. "Owning the Windows PC is not really a priority anymore."
But Cisco's routers make a harder target than Windows. They're not as well-known to hackers and they come in many configurations, so an attack on one router might fail on a second. Another difference is that Cisco administrators are not constantly downloading and running software.
Finally, Cisco has done a lot of work in recent years to cut down on the number of attacks that can be launched against its routers from the Internet, according to Fischbach. "All the basic, really easy exploits you could use against network services are really gone," he said. The risk of having a well-configured router hacked by someone from outside of your corporate network is "really low."
That hasn't deterred the latest crop of security researchers.
Two months ago Core Security researcher Sebastian Muniz showed new ways of building hard-to-detect rootkit programs for Cisco routers, and this week his colleague, Ariel Futoransky, will give a Black Hat update on the company's research in this area.
Also, two researchers from Information Risk Management (IRM), a security consultancy based in London, plan to release a modified version of the GNU Debugger, which gives hackers a view of what happens when Cisco IOS software processes their code, and three shellcode programs that can be used to control a Cisco router.
IRM researchers Gyan Chawdhary and Varun Uppal have taken a second look at Lynn's work. In particular, they took a close look at the way Lynn was able to circumvent an IOS security feature called Check Heap, which scans the router's memory for the type of modifications that would allow a hacker to run unauthorized code on the system.
They discovered that while Cisco had blocked the technique that Lynn used to trick Check Heap, there were still other ways to sneak their code onto the system. After Lynn's disclosure, Cisco "simply patched the vector," said Chawdhary. "In a sense the bug still remains."
By modifying one part of the router's memory, they were able to bypass Check Heap and run their shellcode onto the system, he said.
The researcher Lynn credited with making his own research possible, Felix "FX" Lindner, will also be talking about Cisco hacking at Black Hat. Lindner, head of Recurity Labs, plans to release his new Cisco forensics tool, called CIR (Cisco Incident Response), which he has beta tested for the past several months. There will be a free version, which will check a router's memory for rootkits, while a commercial version of the software will be able to detect attacks and perform forensic analysis of the devices.
This software will give networking professionals like Fischbach a way to go back and look at the memory of a Cisco device and see if it has been tampered with. "I think there's a use for it," he said. "To me, it's part of the toolkit when you do forensics, but it's not the only tool you should rely on."
There are still major barriers for any Cisco attacker, Stewart says. For example, many attackers are reluctant to hack routers, because if they make a mistake, they knock out the entire network. "We sort of get a pass because no one wants to monkey with the infrastructure that they're using," he said. "It's like screwing up the freeway while you're trying to go to a different city. "
Though Cisco may not have any major security worries right now, Stewart is taking nothing for granted.
In fact, he also admitted that his company has been lucky so far and he knows that could change if enough people like Lindner start working on the problem। "We've got time," he said. "We've got the opportunity to be better, and we should continually invest on lowering the attack surface."
